El grupo se formó originalmente en 1994 como Kara's Flowers, mientras sus integrantes cursaban la secundaria. Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden y Ryan Dusick firmaron conReprise Records y lanzaron un álbum, The Fourth World, en 1997.
